Business Topics (15-30 minutes)
The President or delegate goes over club meeting rules.
No Religion or Political topics please (unless related to brewing hobby and please discuss with officers prior).
No cross talking.
Discussion/debate of business topics will be handled per Robert's rules of order please. Raise hand and wait for president, or meeting leadership to call on you.
During tastings, please be respectful of the member presenting a beer by staying quiet.
NO irresponsible drinking, don’t drink & drive, and don’t get hammered. Even if you have a DD or an Uber, this isn't a party. We are a homebrew club not a drinking club.
NO commercial beer during the meeting other than the EduBeer presentation or approval by officers (e.g. I tied to clone this beer, etc.). Approval is at the officer's digression (please communicate prior). These beers will be required to have adequate quantity to share among the club.
All homebrew you bring must be added to circulation list and approved.
Homebrew feedback should be constructive. If you’re unsure whether your feedback is helpful or constructive, you can always share it with an officer or quietly with another experienced member.
We are all learning, even the senior members. Sometimes this is a opportunity to develop your palate or to learn more. Remember, our goal is to build each other up, and sometimes what you’re tasting may be accurate, but not necessarily constructive to share.
A good rule is start with questions like: 1) What do you think? 2) Did it turn out like you wanted? 3) What do you like and not like about it?
These can help you determine if the homebrewer needs or wants help. Also, sometimes certain discussions are better for not in front of the whole group.
Remember not to cross talk when a member is presenting. Let them present. The important thing is that they request feedback, and you provide constructive feedback and ask relevant questions. Unrelated discussions are distracting and can be discourteous to the presenter.
Follow any rules our meeting event host provides.
Secretary Provides Minutes From Last Meeting
Upcoming Events or Awareness topics
For new business topics, all will first seek unanimous consent.
For those topics that we don't have unanimous consent, we will seek to have debates digitally (group chat), and then we will ask if we feel like we can have a vote.
This allows us to move on to the things we care about: learning and sampling.
Only statements relevant to the topic will be discussed. Sidetracks are not helpful.
Debate will follow Robert's rules of order.
We may have some non-voting agenda items that allow for more open discussion, but it is up to the meeting organizer to manage this and guide us according to Robert’s Rules of Order, where participants are called upon with alternating viewpoints. Please keep cross talk and direct replies to a minimum, as they often lead to tangents and unrelated discussions.
7:30-7:45 EduBeer Presentation (15-30 Minutes. Some in-depth presentations may be 45 minutes, but we will try to split these up into two sessions)
Examples are below but are not limited to this if you have an idea please provide it to the EduBeer committee/chair.
Style of the quarter: Approximately every three months there is a selected style which members can brew and bring to the meeting for a club night competition/challenge. The styles are chosen from the BJCP 2021 style guidelines and are intended to get brewers to brew something out of their comfort zone. Every year there are a couple of non-BJCP style beers such as cookie beer, extreme low alcohol beer, candy beer, mead, cider, or maybe even gauntlet or random ingredients.
Gadget/Equipment of the month: Lots of us love our gadgets or expensive equipment that are involved in making better homebrew. This is a time for members to present a product or piece of equipment they are using or have recently seen, and to offer advice or request feedback.
Mystery Beer: An unknown commercial beer is poured to club members. Each member guesses it’s ABV, IBU, BJCP style and beer. The winner maybe earns a prize. This doubles as BJCP judge training for several of our members who are or intend to be BJCP judge certified.
Commercial Calibrations: An unknown beer is presented to the club. In this case, the style is known to the members. The beer may or may not fit the stated style, and the tasting may or may not be blind. Score sheets will be filled out. This is very helpful for preparing for competitions styles. It provides members exposure to the style and score sheets.
8:00-8:15 PM Homebrew Tastings
Officers will serve the homebrew samples in a specific order, usually lighter in taste to heavier in taste.
The presenting member has the floor to provide the details they would like.
While tasting the sample, the brewer may talk about the beer and request feedback in one of the following ways: 1) Provide basic flavor impressions only; no deeper feedback is being requested. 2) The brewer is seeking help and wants focused, constructive feedback on specific aspects of the homebrew. 3) All feedback is welcome. The brewer likes the beer and won’t be offended; share anything you notice.
Homebrew feedback should be constructive. If you’re unsure whether your feedback is helpful or constructive, you can always share it with an officer or quietly with a seasoned member for guidance.
